THANKS:

It is customary, after each event, to thank those who made the organization and management of the event possible.

I would like to avoid some formalisms and thank Giuseppe Macaione who introduced me to PLOGGING, and then list those who I involved in this project idea in chronological order.

The first person I involved was the director of the XI Paino Gravitelli Comprehensive Institute, Professor Domizia Arrigo, who was enthusiastic and told me "of course we as an Institute are in this project, we are a GREEN school with a sports focus".

It has acted as a promoter as leader to create a network of purpose and has involved 3 other comprehensive institutes: La Pira Gentiluomo - Messina - Comprehensive Institute IV Comprehensive Institute "G. Leopardi" of Messina Comprehensive Institute Pascoli Crispi

My thanks go to the directors of these institutes: Professors Ersilia Caputo, Luisa Lo Manto, and Giusy De Luca.

The second person I involved is Smedile Santi, president of CSI Messina, a capable and concrete person who reassures and encourages us to always do more.

The third person I spoke with was Deputy Commissioner Mirella Vinci, architect. A few words were enough, and thanks to her sensitivity, she immediately grasped the civic value of the initiative, pragmatically demonstrating that the institutions are there and are committed to the community's interests.

The fourth person I would like to thank is Dr. Carmen Caristi. She doesn't want to appear, she doesn't even want to be thanked, but I know she has interacted resolutely and authoritatively with the various offices.

I would like to thank the President of Messina Servizi Bene Comune Giuseppe Lombardo, the General Director Nicola Russo and the member of the Board of Directors Mariagrazia Interdonato.

I would like to thank Dr. Maria Catena Silvestri, psychologist and psychotherapist. We immediately found a convergence of ideas and goals on the topic of neurodiversity and the need to include those who, unfortunately, are not usually included. THANKS TO THE FOUR COMPETITION JUDGES and to the entire staff coordinated by Maria Catena, including Alessandra Sergi, Simona Sutera, Maria Teresa Girolamo.

I WANT to thank:

Friend Walter Arena, who never backs down when there's something to be useful to the community.

Our friend Renato Cancelliere, who, as president of the Peloritani Radio Amateurs Association, shares and leads many projects together.

My friend Michele La Rosa, my partner in so many initiatives and adventures, ranging from theater to music, and on this occasion, even sports. He's a constant in my life, certainly from a computer science perspective, but above all from a human perspective.

The very young Rosario Ciccolo, who has recently become an integral part of the ARB team and has already demonstrated notable potential.

I would like to thank Gabriella, Gina, Bruno, and Davide for their participation in the event today and their contribution to its smooth running.

He won't agree because he doesn't want to appear and he doesn't want to be thanked, but I can only be happy to live and share these experiences with him, he's my son Ettore.

I'm a lucky dad.

I conclude this roundup with a special thanks to the author of these beautiful photos

We invite everyone to attend the first edition of MESSINA PLOGGING 2022.

PLOGGING is a new sport with high civic value.

This discipline combines sport with environmental protection, was born in Sweden in 2016 and quickly became a global phenomenon and consists of collecting waste while running.

The routes can be urban or extra-urban, and the competition is characterized by the quantity of waste collected and the quality of proper waste diversification, all in the shortest possible time.

The ASD ARB Messina, promoter of the event, involved the CSI (Italian Sports Center) and the XI PAINO GRAVITELLI comprehensive institute, the latter as the leader of a network of purpose made up of the following comprehensive institutes: PASCOLI CRISPI - LA PIRA GENTILUOMO - LEOPARDI

Each school participates in the competition with a team of athletes aged between 10 and 13.

During the event, the teams from the comprehensive schools will compete in five 15-minute heats to obtain the highest score.

The score is dictated by the time spent and the quantity of waste collected in compliance with the criteria for correct separation.

Staff and management from MESSINA SERVIZI BENE COMUNE will also be present, informing participants about the importance of a proper and forward-looking waste collection and sorting policy.

We strongly believe in the civic value of this initiative, which combines sport with respect for the place where we live.

This message is even more powerful because it is embodied by the younger generations and by the educational institutions that represent the most important educational agency after the family.

Furthermore, ASD ARB Messina, in collaboration with Dr. Maria Catena Silvestri, psychologist and psychotherapist, has also focused on neurodiversity in this sporting event. From a perspective of integration, demonstrating how diversity is a resource.

Focusing on the abilities of children with high-functioning autism spectrum disorders and involving them in a key role in the race's success. A group effort, positive for both themselves and the community, combining running with waste collection aims to protect nature and the environment, becoming active participants and promoters of change. This is more than just a sporting or cultural event; it is a journey of dignity for autistic people and their families, involved in this competition as race judges. It means giving each autistic person involved the opportunity to take their place in society, in their own community, feeling not a burden but a resource.

We thank the following for their sensitivity and effectiveness:

Architect Mirella Vinci, Deputy Commissioner of the Municipality of Messina

Dr. Carmen Caristi, of the Secretariat of the Extraordinary Commissioner of the Municipality of Messina

Architect Pippo Lombardo, President of Messinaservizi Bene Comune SpA

Engineer Nicola Russo, General Manager of Messinaservizi Bene Comune SpA

Dr. Maria Catena Silvestri, psychologist, psychotherapist

Lieutenant AM Renato Cancelliere, President of Radio Amatori Peloritani OdV

Dr. Santino Smedile, President of the Provincial Committee of the CSI (Italian Sports Center)

Finally, gratitude and applause to Professor Domizia Arrigo, director of the PAINO GRAVITELLI Comprehensive Institute, who with energy and passion protects the interests of the students, activating an educational offer rich in experiences

AUTISM

The word autism, etymologically derives from the Greek αὐτός (autos) "oneself", a term introduced for the first time at the beginning of the twentieth century by the Swiss psychodynamic psychiatrist Eugen Bleuler.

The etymological root of the term refers to those communication and social difficulties and shared attention that are found at different levels and in different ways in autism spectrum disorders.

Autism spectrum disorder is a childhood-onset disorder characterized by severe, pervasive impairment in two areas of development: communication and social interaction skills, and interests and activities.

Today, 10 out of 1,000 children are affected by autism spectrum disorder. The prognosis of the disorder is influenced by the level of cognitive functioning, which is considered the best predictor of future development.

For example, high-functioning autism (HFA) is defined as a total IQ greater than 65/70, that is, when there are no neurological disorders, verbal language is present, and there is no intellectual disability, but there are difficulties in social interaction.

The term "spectrum" refers to the marked variability found in the type and severity of symptoms. Many people with autism are able to work and possess the skills necessary to excel in their fields.

Recent literature suggests that physical activity may be a useful approach to supporting children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder.

Sports have always been considered therapeutic, and have long been considered a good way to strengthen various cognitive functions, such as attention and self-control. Furthermore, sports practice is also effective in reducing stress, a component present in individuals with high-functioning autism.

Every person with autism is unique and unrepeatable
