European Parliament conference on the Sicilian language, December 2023

Is Sicilian a “second-rate language” compared to Italian?

Or a rich linguistic and cultural heritage to be proud of?

What prejudices (and self-prejudices) undermine its use?

How is it possible that UNESCO recognizes the Sicilian language as a native language and places it among the "vulnerable languages" to be protected, while Sicilians themselves struggle to perceive the erosion of their historical identity?

Why has Regional Law No. 9 of 2011, which requires its teaching in schools, remained unimplemented?

What initiatives can Sicilian institutions, citizens, and the new generations take to reverse the trend?

These and other questions are the subject of the "Round Table on the Dignity of the Sicilian Language: Reflections and Actionable Proposals," which will take place on September 26, the European Day of Languages, with the participation of distinguished guests.
