Conference on the Sicilian language
Ignazio Corrao, MEP, organized a two-day event in Brussels dedicated to promoting Sicilian linguistic heritage, its linguistic dignity, its history, and the pride of speaking the Sicilian language. He invited scholars, teachers, associations, institutions, and artists to promote and institutionalize our language.
The event's goal is to unite all the various stakeholders and institutions present around an action plan, and engage them in concrete projects, initiatives, and legislative reforms that strengthen the protection of the Sicilian linguistic heritage. This is a pioneering gathering, considering that 150 prominent figures, including those from overseas, who have dedicated their lives to Sicilian, will be gathered around a round table in the heart of Europe.
On Thursday, December 7, starting at 2:00 p.m., a round table discussion will be held in the prestigious ASP 3E2 room of the European Parliament. All participants will meet to discuss the event, which will begin at 3:00 p.m. with presentations by speakers, including Professor Alfonso Campisi, professor of the first Sicilian language teaching chair in the world at Manouba University in Tunis; Professor Giovanni Ruffino, president of the Center for Sicilian Philological and Linguistic Studies; Councilor Mimmo Turano; Dr. Aurelio La Torre, director of the Presidency of the Council; and Professor Emeritus Gaetano Cipolla, professor of St. John's University, New York.
The two-day event in Brussels marked a milestone in the promotion of our beloved Sicilian language.
It brought together associations, academia, scholars, artists, and institutions to map out a concrete path to ensure Sicilians stop being ashamed of their language and break down barriers and prejudices surrounding our accents and expressions.
All the interventions will be disclosed, but we at the ARB Cultural Association believe that Aurelio La Torre's intervention represents the right aims and the most concrete strategic vision, aimed at achieving the set objectives.
